what mish read - new TBR additions (winter 2023)

Can't stop, won't stop, buying all the books!

I recently saw a video on Instagram where they said something along the lines of 'you're not buying books, you're rescuing them' and that is the mindset I will have from now on haha.

Plus, it goes towards our dream of having a wall full of books one day - our own little library. Or maybe, even an actual library, a whole room of books!

Each couple finds something that is their thing to do, and one of ours is going to bookshop together and browsing the aisles and trying not to come home with all the books haha. When we go away, we always try to stop by a bookstore. That's definitely become a little tradition of ours. One I love. I love sharing this with the Mr. Even though we are quite opposite in what we like to read (he's loves his non-fiction), it's still a wonderful shared thing between us.
I love wondering what he'll end up getting, as it's usually very different from what I will choose.

Anyway, click continue reading to see what I've picked up in our most recent wanderings at bookshops this winter...

📚

We recently went on a little weekend getaway down to Mandurah with two of our closest friends, V's best mate and his wife - we call ourselves the awesome foursome and funnily enough got engaged the same month as each other. Anyway, that's a story for another day.

Unfortunately we missed out on going to a bookshop in Mandurah, so on our way back home we stopped into My Little Bookshop in Rockingham.

I've been following them for a while on Instagram, as my best friend shared that they had a travelling bookshop and had been to one of the markets near her. I mean, how cool is that?!

Kerry, the owner, start My Little Bookshop off as a travelling bookshop in 2019, then in March 2022 they opened the MLB store on the Rockingham foreshore.
Today, they have the Rockingham store and 3 travelling bookshops.
I haven't yet to see the travelling bookshops in person as of yet, but seeing we were *sort of* going past Rockingham we couldn't not stop in could we??

Things I loved about this bookshop:
💕 The checkerboard floor 😍
💕 They are a very inclusive & diverse bookshop
💕 LGTBQIA+ friendly with a section for LGTBQIA+ books
💕 Tuesday's are disability discount day, and the store is wheelchair friendly
💕 Great selection of local authors, along with a section of self-published local authors
💕 Also a fantastic selection of kids books
💕 Dog friendly! Woo woo!
💕 They hold author talks, book clubs, quiz nights, they off venue hire (yep, you can hold an event at a bookshop!), and they've done workshops that aren't about books
💕 There's tea and coffee, and couches!
💕 Oh, and they have a great selection of gifts, puzzles, bookmarks etc

Overall, this is a fantastic community & diversity focused bookshop and I highly recommended popping in if you're down that way!

I love the cover of this book, yes I am a sucker for gorgeous & colourful covers. I also love that it's set in Bangalore, where the Mr was born. The blurb was fantastic too.
Another choice purposefully driven by the cover haha, but I do want to read Agatha Christie being such classic whodunnit author so why not start with a stunning hardcover version!
This one was on the sale cart (love perusing through the sale section, you never know what you'll find or what takes your fancy because it's on discount 😉). I'm not the biggest fantasy reader but the blurb intrigued me so I thought why not give it a go.
When we got to the counter to pay, there was a suitcase (an old school one, delightful!) with various books. Kerry informed us that with a purchase we could choose a book for free to take home with us. These were advance proof copies of titles. A wonderful little surprise. A number to choose from but this took my fancy.

When one of your favourite authors releases a new book, well you just have to get it! Especially if it is the third and final book of the trilogy you have been reading.
Can't wait to get into this one, the final instalment of the Joubert family chronicles, I loved the two books preceding this one so hopefully this one is just as good.
I ADORE this cover! Stunning! Only con is that is its completely different to the other two books... 😅
But still, I am very happy to have this gorgeous cover artwork on the shelf!

Picked this beauty up from Crow Books in Vic Park. Great selection of books, as well as bits and bobs for gifts and also cool selection of greeting cards.
The awesome thing about Crow is that they are open until late, so perfect post dinner spot to end the night.

After having breaky with friends of ours at one of the cafes in Bassendean, we decided to pop round the corner to check out Bassendean Books.

What a great find! Well, not really a find...just that we hadn't been yet. It was only meant to be a quick pop in but time got away from us and I think we were there for about an hour. So many book, organised in genre and also author specific shelves too. Bassendean books is a second-hand book exchange, so if you like exchanging your books for fresh ones this the place to come.

There were so many books I wanted to grab but alas, I restrained myself...a little bit. But we will definitely be back again soon! I was only able to get through general fiction and romance books.. with a downstairs section I never even got to look at (though V did as that's were many of the non-fiction books were).

If there is a particular book you are looking for that you can no longer get at bookshops, ask Lucy, the owner, and she will keep an eye out for you and give you a bell if it comes in.
Also got the cutest little magnetic bookmark with the books that is also the bookshop's business card.

I just read this book the other week, a really great page turner. Will try do maybe a 'books read in August' kind of post soon and say more about it.
An Liked the blurb, and I have read Ahern books in the past.
Seems like a good easy rom-com read!
Reading the blurb of this book reminded me of my grandfather.
Loved the cover.
In the bargain trolley, the cover intrigued me then the blurb also.

One of my favourite places to look for second-hand books is actually at op shops, mainly because they are such good bargains and you usually pick up a book for only a couple of dollars.

The same day we went to Crow Books, we also discovered an op shop down the other end of Vic Park, the city end, called Hope Op Shop.
Down the back of this store is a small but great selection of books, it also has lots of other items from clothing to knick knacks. It's definitely a place you could score something fabulous.
Our score was books, well, more me as they were all for me haha. V is much more restrained when it comes to books.
I scored 6 books for only $10! Total bargain!

Historic fiction read about the Black Death - intrigued.
I saw this in Dymocks months ago and popped it on my book wish list so I was super happy when I saw this on the shelf and for such a bargain.
I read Shafak's The Bastard of Istanbul in 2021 and really enjoyed her writing.
This book was on the shelf at the accommodation for our weekend away, sounded interesting so when I saw it I thought, why not.
I read McIntosh's The Tea Gardens earlier this year and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I am also a sucker for historical fiction.
I grabbed this one because I thought it was on my Goodreads want to read list and I had seen it somewhere...though it wasn't on my want to read list and I think I may have been thinking of another book but still seems like an interesting read. I've been getting into a bit of mystery & thriller reading this year so adding to my branching out.
The 6th book isn't pictured because it is a copy of a book I already have, but I was on the hunt for a specific cover to complete the trilogy set. I think I first purchased Labyrinth when they re-released the cover in 2015, and I loved the book. It was my first taste of Kate Mosse's writing and I was hooked. I managed to pick up 2nd-hand copies of the second and third books of the trilogy and managed to get the same covers for those two. I was just left with the 2015 cover artwork for this book and as much as I was 'eh it's okay', when I spied a version at Bassendean Books I decided then I wanted to replace it so they are all the same. I wasn't sure if it was the right cover so snapped a photo to compare at home. It wasn't so I thought oh well, whenever it comes up I'll grab it and then BAM! a week later the right cover was in this shop.
I know some people are very 'must have the exact same cover and size for all trilogy books' and then others are in the 'eh it's all okay, don't care' category and I think I fall somewhere in between haha.

And that was my winter book haul. I think that was all my haul...I could have missed one haha. It's added quite a few books to my TBR section on the bookshelf.. back up to over 70 books.. I thought about abstaining from getting any new books during September but alas, that has not happened.
So, maybe October?? 😅
At this rate, I will never finish my TBR list haha.
Anyway, thanks for making it this far and seeing that I added to the bookshelf this winter and I hope you take some time to visit these local businesses. Happy book browsing and buying!

Big hugs,
Mish
